Find the Right AC Adapter for your Laptop

Choosing a Replacement Adapter:
Find your laptop’s model number.
This laptop has
  • V = An input Voltage of 19.5V.
  • AC or DC – DC as indicated by the symbol.
  • mAh/A – consumes 3.34A to 4.62A of current.
You may find this number located on a sticker on the bottom or side of your laptop computer. If you can’t find it there, check your user manual or search your laptop’s built-in help program for the model number. You can also find it under your laptop’s system properties.

Find your wattage requirements.
  • The adapter output V matches the rated input V of the device.
  • The adapter output is greater or equal to the devices rated mAh or A.
  • The plug fits into your device and has the correct polarity.

In addition to your laptop model number, you will need to find out the voltage requirements for the laptop adapter. Laptop adapters have varying voltage (V) outputs, and using the wrong laptop adapter can damage your computer. Check your user’s manual for voltage requirements information for your laptop. The output voltage will usually be listed as DC voltage. You may also want to check for product or part numbers that are compatible with your laptop model.

Checking the (V)olts

  • AC or DC – Most adapters convert AC to DC, but it is still important to check the output.
  • Volts – This is usually written on the adapter sticker or near the power connector port and can be written as V ,VAC or VCD.

Checking the (A)mps

  • Amps: This is also usually written on the devices sticker or near the power port, this is measured in A or mAh. The adapter you choose must be able to supply at least the current rating of the device. Do not worry if the adapter has a higher rating as the device will only consume what it needs. Usually, a higher power adapter will be more expensive, so if you have the option just match the device’s power.

Find a compatible laptop adapter.
Look for the compatibility lists in descriptions of laptop adapters you are looking at. Sometimes the compatible laptop models are listed in the product description or in a separate list. Laptop model numbers can often look similar, so make sure the model numbers match exactly. Laptop adapter and power cord product descriptions typically list the manufacturer, part number and a partial description as well. If you find an adapter with the correct output voltage, but the wrong port connector, you may be able to find port attachments that will adapt the connector to the power port on your laptop.

The basic equations are here
W = V X A
A = W/V
V = W/A
The adapter and the device must match so always double check the symbol on the AC adapter and the device show the same polarity.

Choosing the plug

Hopefully you have the size of the devices plug and can just check the adapters measurements, there are two measurements for these types of connectors.
  • OD – Outer diameter of the plug.
  • ID – Inner diameter of the plug.
If you are measuring you need the diameter of the center pin for the (ID) and the inner diameter of the port (OD).
